Shreyas Iyer made his T20I captaincy debut for India in the series opener against Ireland

India won the toss and elected to field first

Shreyas Iyer’s first outing as India's full-time T20I captain immediately secured a place in the history books before a single ball was even bowled. Leading the national side against Ireland in the two-match series opener at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast, Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to field.

Shreyas Iyer breaks Rohit Sharma's record in 1st T20I vs Ireland

The moment Iyer stepped onto the field for the toss, the elegant batsman surpassed a major milestone previously held by Rohit Sharma to become the most experienced player to debut as India's T20I captain. Iyer assumed the mantle after featuring in 114 T20 matches, eclipsing Rohit's record of 80 appearances prior to his own captaincy debut. This seasoned group of leadership rookies includes Virat Kohli, who first led after 72 games, followed by KL Rahul at 42, Rishabh Pant at 30, and Shikhar Dhawan at 21.

In addition to his experience milestone, the 31-year-old etched his name into another exclusive list based on longevity. At 31 years and 202 days old, Iyer is now the third-oldest cricketer to debut as India's T20I skipper. He sits just behind Shikhar Dhawan, who took the reins at 35 years and 232 days, and Suryakumar Yadav, who debuted at 33 years and 70 days, while rounding out a top five that includes Rohit Sharma (30 years and 234 days) and KL Rahul (30 years and 143 days).

Stepping out to lead his country at 31 years and 202 days, Iyer also became the third-oldest player to make his T20I captaincy debut for India. He follows only Shikhar Dhawan, who took the helm at 35 years and 232 days, and Suryakumar Yadav, who debuted at 33 years and 70 days. This veteran leadership group is rounded out by Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, who made their captaincy debuts at 30 years and 234 days and 30 years and 143 days, respectively. It marks a significant milestone for Iyer, who first entered the T20I arena against New Zealand back in 2017 and has since amassed 1,104 runs at a strike rate of 136.12 across 52 international appearances.

Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's senior India debut got delayed?

Meanwhile, high-flying teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was omitted from the starting lineup despite heavy pre-match speculation surrounding a potential international debut. Addressing the decision, Iyer praised the youngster as a "gun player" but explained that management chose to reward the consistency of the squad's seasoned performers. Opting to rely on the established top-order combination of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan, the skipper emphasized that while the prodigy will have to wait for now, his time in the Indian colors will undoubtedly come.
