India’s tour of South Africa is officially delayed by the Board of control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after consulting the players and team management. South Africa are on red alert of several nations as the Omicron variant has taken its toll on the nation. The T20 series has been postponed indefinitely with the Test and ODI series to go forward.
"BCCI has confirmed CSA that the Indian team will travel for three Tests and three ODIs. The remaining four T20Is will be played at a later date,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed.
BCCI who was in constant touch with Cricket South Africa (CSA) after the outbreak of the Omicron variant had consulted the board to postpone the series. Most recently, the Netherlands canceled their three-match ODI series after the pandemic hit nation came on red alert. The BCCI on Wednesday had asked CSA to postpone the tour by a week.
The Indian team is currently playing New Zealand in the second Test match at Mumbai was due to travel to South Africa on December 8. There is no clarification on rescheduled dates but the series will begin on Boxing Day on December 26. India had taken a pragmatic approach when dealing with the ongoing saga and there were even calls that the tour could be called off.
As things stand India will travel to South Africa and will play in three Tests and three ODIs. Earlier the teams were scheduled to play the first Test match on December 17 in Johannesburg.
