Months after ugly verbal spat in IPL 2023 Kyle Mayers breaks silence on Virat Kohli's aggression, says 'Being aggressive is always good'

The 2023 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 was not short of controversial moments. In the Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) home clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Virat Kohli was involved in an ugly spat with LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir, Afghan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq. Kohli was also seen having a conversation with Kyle Mayers before Gambhir dragged the latter. More than four months after the incident, Mayers was asked about the incident. The West Indies opener did not have a controversial answer to the question.

"You had a little bit of banter with Virat Kohli in the IPL, what do you think of his aggression in the game?" the Caribbean all-rounder was asked on Fan Code.

"It's great, sometimes you need to get at your opposition, to create any chance to get out of the game. Being aggressive is always good, it shows courage and the willingness to get your team over the line," the 30-year-old replied.

Kohli and Gambhir were fined 100 per cent of their match fees by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for breaching the Code of Conduct. Also, Naveen was fined 50 per cent of his match fees for his part in the controversial exchange.

Mayers was also asked, "Among Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, which one would be your most previous wicket?"

The medium pacer did not waste time before saying Kohli’s name. “Any bowler would want to dismiss Kohli, the best player across all three formats," he said.

Both Kohli and Rohit were rested from the last two of the three-ODI series to give chances to other players. India lost the second ODI but made a comeback to win the decider by a big margin and the series by 2-1 under stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya.

In the T20I series, West Indies got off to a winning start with a four-run win over Pandya’s side. Meanwhile, Kohli is not a part of the five-T20I series. India will take on Rovman Powell-led West Indies in the second T20I at Providence Stadium, Guyana on August 6.
