Two new teams- Ahmedabad and Lucknow, will take part in the upcoming edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. On Monday (January 24), Lukcnow franchise which is owned by Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG group, revealed their new name as Lucknow Super Giants.
But since the announcement of the new name, fans and followers have started expressing their disappointment on social media. Some even started trolling the franchise as well.
Fans were not happy because the now-defunct Pune team which was also owned by Goenka had a same name as well. The Pune team was known as Rising Pune Supergiant.
An innovative method
It is important to mention here, that the new name- ‘Lucknow Super Giants,’ was suggested by an eight-year-old kid, who took part in a contest after Goenka had bought the franchise in 2021. The letters- 'S and G' from the abbreviation of the RPSG group can be found in the name of the franchise.
Previously, Indian batsman KL Rahul who recently led the Indian team in the ODI series against South Africa and the Indian Test team in the second Test match of the Test series, was announced as the new captain of the Lucknow side, Rahul was roped in for Rs. 17 crore.
Stoinis and Bishnoi in the team
Apart from Rahul, Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and India’s Ravi Bishnoi were also picked up by them. Stoinis was signed for an amount of Rs. 9.2 crore and Bishnoi was roped in for Rs. 4 crore.
In latest seasons, Stoinis has been in a splendid form for his former team Delhi Capitals. The Aussie all-rounder has played in 56 matches in IPL till now and has scored 914 runs and picked up 30 wickets.
Bishnoi on the other hand, was previously a part of Punjab Kings. In 23 matches in IPL, he has picked up 24 wickets at an economy rate of 6.97.
Gautam Gambhir had been signed in as the team’s mentor.
The other new team of the IPL 2022 edition will be the Ahmedabad team and they had previously announced India all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s name as their leader for the 15th edition of IPL.
Apart from Pandya, Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan and Indian batter Shubman Gill were also picked by the Ahmedabad franchise.
