Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant was handed a massive fine of Rs 12 lakh for maintaining slow over-rate during their team's six-wicket loss to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday. As this was Pant's first offense, he was the only one to be penalised. However, the sanctions could be severe if the offense is repeated.
Issuing a statement on the official website, IPL confirmed the penalty imposed on Pant. The statement read: “The Delhi Capitals have been fined after they maintained a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on April 7.
“As it was the team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to a minimum over-rate offences, Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant was fined Rs 12 lakhs.”
The rules state that if Pant is unable to maintain the required over-rate in any of DC's upcoming matches, he would be handed a fine of Rs 24 lakh. The other 10 players in the team will also see six lakhs or 25 per cent of their match fees (depending on which amount is lesser) being deducted from their pockets.
In the hunt for their second win of the season, the Capitals ended up on the losing side after their bowlers were unable to take control of the LSG batters in the second innings. Opener Prithvi Shaw was their best batter, notching 61 runs in 34 balls with nine fours and two sixes.
With a small target to chase down for the Lucknow-based franchise, opener Quinton de Kock scored a brilliant 80 runs off 52 balls before being dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav in the 16th over. However, it was seemingly too late for the Capitals, with Ayush Badoni scoring in the final over to secure a close-fought win.
