The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season has not been a great one for Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma and his side. Injuries have played spoilsport as well, with the latest to join the list being their only in-form batter Suryakumar Yadav, who was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign prior to the match after sustaining a left forearm injury during their game against Gujarat Titans (GT). But skipper Rohit will himself feel hard done by with his dismissal on the night.
Mumbai took on another inconsistent side in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the DY Patil Stadium on Monday, May 9. After winning the toss, Rohit chose to bowl first and the KKR batters, after a bright start, were stunning by a five-wicket spell from Jasprit Bumrah that contained them to just 165 runs.
The opener Rohit was then dismissed in the first over itself by Tim Southee, who bowled a good length delivery that appeared to get a nick off the bat as the KKR camp flung out in appeal. The on-field umpire ruled in Rohit's favour. But Shreyas Iyer's side took a review and after much deliberation, the third umpire signalled in KKR's favour.
Rohit appeared stunned, and after seeing the replays of his dismissal, fans on Twitter were in disbelief as there were plenty of spikes on ultraedge, even before the ball crossed the bat. Ultraedge usually shows a spike only when the ball passes by the bat, however, for some unknown reason, the spikes on ultraedge during Rohit's dismissal left netizens furious as it was even before the ball reached the bat.
Many people were left fuming after the decision. They all felt that the wicket should not have been given by the umpire, as Mumbai then crumbled under the pressure.
After the dismissal of their skipper, all the MI batters were under immense pressure, except Ishan Kishan, who played a great knock of 51 off 43 balls. But after he was dismissed by Pat Cummins, there was only one-way traffic for the bowlers as KKR dominated the proceedings thereafter. Cummins picked up three wickets, as Mumbai were dismissed for 113 runs, with Andre Russell also picking up two wickets for his team.
