The fans at Dubai International Cricket Stadium witnessed something that had never happened before. MI Emirates' West Indies all-rounder Odean Smith walked out to bat but could not face a single delivery as he was not a part of the playing XI. Smith was sent by MI Emirates team management as a Super-sub but the umpires were not notified that he was listed as one. After a long discussion between MI Emirates batting coach Ajay Jadeja and the umpires, Smith had to return to the dugout.
The incident took place after the 16th over. Wanindu Hasaranga had dismissed Ambati Rayudu and MI Emirates were 111/6. Smith was sent as a Super-sub but left the field without playing a ball.
Here’s what ILT20 rulebook says about Super-sub
Each team will have an option to substitute one player at any stage of the match after completion of the first over of the innings. If desired by the team, Super-Sub can be introduced right from the start of the second innings. A player once substituted cannot participate in the remaining part of the match. The Head Coach shall nominate the Super-Sub to the fourth umpire and the on-field umpire will signal the scorers (wrists crossed above the head) indicating that the Super-Sub is being introduced.
Bravo remains unbeaten, David’s cameo pushes the score
After the confusion, Dwayne Bravo came out to bat. He remained unbeaten for 10 runs from 10 deliveries. It was Tim David's 14-ball 28 cameo that helped his side post 149/9 on the board. Mohammad Amir bowled well in the final over. After taking David's wicket, he dismissed Trent Boult for a golden duck. Only six runs were scored in the final over which included a boundary off David's bat. On the final ball, Fazalhaq Farooqi was run out as well.
No game time for Smith
The West Indies all-rounder is yet to get a game in ILT20 under the leadership of his West Indies teammate Nicholas Pooran. Meanwhile, MI Emirates are dominating in the tournament as they are at the top of the points table.
