The five-time champions Mumbai Indians had one of the most disappointing seasons in the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League as they finished at the bottom of the points table with 8 points. Their move to appoint Hardik Pandya as the new captain also unleashed a lot of backlash towards the all-rounder. However, the fan-favourite franchise arrived at the IPL 2025 mega auction to assemble their perfect squad and as per their owner Akash Ambani the franchise has already locked in their playing 12.

The MI owner said they are happy with their position current position. At the moment of writing, they have 19 players in total and have bought 14 of them in the auction. Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Will Jacks headlined their buys in the auction. They also got some young talent like Robin Minz, Raj Angad Bawa, and Naman Dhir for whom they used RTM.
"Very happy at this position because we have got our playing 12 locked in now. Happy with all the players we have gotten till now. Of course, disappointed to lose so many ex-Mumbai Indians players. The last three years, we’ve thought a lot about what’s the balance that we truly need to get back to winning ways and for that, you had to balance the emotional aspect of buying players and the skills required in this new T20 game. Very, very disappointed to miss out on a lot of ex-MI players who have given us a lot of success, all the best to all of them for their new franchises but also happy with what we have achieved at MI," said Akash Ambani.
Prior to the auction, they had retained Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Tilak Varma. They had to release players like Ishan Kishan, who they could not even get back in the auction as well.
