Omkar Salvi has been appointed as the new bowling coach for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). Salvi was the assistant bowling coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) earlier this year. The team that defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL final at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium to win the title for the third time.
The Mumbai team that won the Irani Cup and the Ranji Trophy had Salvi as their bowling coach as well. He will now try to continue his winning ways with the Challengers in the IPL after winning eight trophies in the previous eight months. After serving in India's domestic cricket, Salvi will join RCB.
Omkar is the brother of former Indian bowler Avishkar Salvi, who was the head coach of the Punjab squad that won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and is now the bowling coach for the Indian women's side.
Prior to the 2023–24 season, Salvi was appointed head coach of the domestic Mumbai team. Mumbai ended their eight-year Ranji Trophy drought during his leadership. They won their 42nd title in the first-class tournament's history after defeating Vidarbha by 102 runs in the final.
Rahane on Salvi
Before the Mumbai vs Vidarbha Ranji final, Ajinkya Rahane supported local coaches like Salvi to lead Indian cricket.
"It is really good to have a coach like Omkar (Salvi) with us. It shows that you don't need high-profile or flashy coaches to be around the team. You can still be under the radar. You can still stay low-profile and get the best out of each and every player," Rahane had said.
Despite participating in every season since 2008, RCB has failed to win the IPL championship, therefore Salvi has a huge task ahead of them. They made it to the playoffs last year but were unable to proceed past the Eliminator.
