He was dropped twice on 0 and 1, and has made all those chances count. He raises the bat to the applause from the Indian faithful and the men in the dressing room who appreciate another brilliant knock of his. He cruises to his 2nd Test hundred by clipping the full ball to long on for a single.

This is a lot better by Lahiru Kumara as he comes over the stumps, bowls a short one again, on middle and off, Ravindra Jadeja hops up on his toes and defends this under his eyeline. 

Lahiru peppers the short length again, but this one just keeps low. Jadeja has no plans to poke at it and just drops his guard at it. The ball thuds him on his gloves and rolls to gully for no run. 

Lahiru is bringing on the heat here. Bowls at 135 kph, short and going across the batter. Ravindra Jadeja leaves it. 

A testing maiden over. Short stuff once again, around middle and off, Ravindra Jadeja looks to block but bails out at the end with the ball angling away and bouncing enough. Sees it getting gathered behind the stumps by the keeper.

Asitha just concedes and lets the ball go to the fence without putting in a dive.

 Smell that leather, mate! Lahiru slams it short and on top of the stumps with extra bounce. Rishabh Pant gets outside the line to play the pull shot but gets completely off-balance, and the ball goes off the gloves as the ball dribbles to the keeper. Kumara has a few words for the batter, but Pant simply walks away, wincing in pain and needing some medical attention.

Welcome to the crease, Jadeja! Bowls the bouncer, outside off, Jadeja arches back, drops the wrists to leave. Lahiru is all charged up and lasers a stare at the batter.

Another sharp bouncer, just outside off. But this one does not rise much from the surface. Ravindra Jadeja sways away from the firing line. The ball dips and drops in front of Dickwella who collects it a bit to his left.

Keeps bending his back and banging it short, does Kumara. Jadeja offers no shot.

Short of a good length, 136.6 kph, just outside off. Jadeja drops his back knee and leans back to make the leave.

But hang on, UltraEdge later throws up a flat line, meaning the ball never actually made contact with Pant. Both we and the umpire missed that in real time.

Quicker and shorter, clocked at 86.8 kph outside off. Pant goes for the late cut but cannot find the gap through short third, finding the fielder stationed there instead. The ball actually skims just past the left of the backward silly point fielder too, and Pant will know how fortunate he is that it neither stuck there nor ballooned straight into his hands off a deflection.

Nips in from a good length, on off, Devdutt Padikkal swivels and pulls it to the left of deep square leg for a single.

Beaten! Swings away from the batter, on a good length, outside the off stump. Shubman Gill dangles the bat loosely away from his body to slash it to the off side, but gets comprehensively beaten on the outside edge. Probably the first loose shot from Gill so far!

On a fuller length, around the off pole. Gill gets on the front foot and blocks it firmly to covers.

Fairly outside off, on a length, not rising much after landing. Gill offers no shot at it.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! The 120-run partnership comes to an end. At long last, Sri Lanka have their breakthrough, and it is Asitha's pace that does the job. He holds his line just outside off and shapes the ball away a touch. Shubman Gill flirts with the wide delivery, reaching to access the off side, and edges it through to the keeper. Niroshan Dickwella very nearly spills it though, moving across to his right, but the ball pops out of his gloves initially, and he dives well and redeems himself, completing the catch at the second attempt. Gill, who had barely put a hair out of place all innings, walks back after a fine knock, and India move to 186/3.

Drama! Full from Asitha, and shaping into the batter, going down leg. Rishabh Pant's head falls over as he attempts for a flick but plays the wrong line and is hit on the front pad. A huge and prolonged appeal for LBW, but the umpire Ahsan Raza shakes his head. Despite a vociferous appeal from everyone behind the bat, Sri Lanka do not go for a review. UltraEdge shows no bat involved with a yawning gap between bat and ball. And it did look to be going down leg in real time. Nearly two in two for Fernando who has got the ball talking whenever operating. Pant survives though and that will be TEA on Day 1!

FOUR! These are easy pickings for Jaiswal! Very short, into the body. Yashasvi Jaiswal swivels on the back foot, rolls his wrists to control the pull shot and hammers it to deep backward square leg for a cracking boundary.

OUT! CHOPPED ON! Fernando replies with a peach of a delivery and gives a bit of send-off to Jaiswal who hurls a few words at the bowler as he trudges off. Asitha bowls from around the stumps. Fuller than a length, around off. It lands and nips back in very sharply and also stays a tad low on the bounce. Yashasvi Jaiswal is caught on the crease, tries to punch it through the covers, but gets a thick inside edge that crashes into the stumps behind him. A fluent knock ends just as he was closing in on a well-deserved half-century, and India slip to 66/2.

FOUR! Excellent effort from the debutant, Mishara, but goes in vain. 50 UP FOR INDIA! Slightly short and on off, Yashasvi Jaiswal has ample time to go back and he whips it across towards deep mid-wicket. Kamil Mishara covers a lot of ground, almost running a mile to his right from deep square leg and throws himself to dive and tries to flick the ball back in. He gets a hand to it, but it squirms free and trickles on, and though he scrambles for a second attempt, it just creeps over the rope for four.
