Returning to the playing XI after a break, Mushfiqur Rahim departed after scoring 18 runs in the third ODI against New Zealand.

Bangladesh's wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim was dismissed in a bizarre fashion in the third ODI of the series against New Zealand. Rahim was out bowled by stand-in New Zealand skipper Lockie Ferguson despite trying to kick the ball away from the stumps.

The dismissal took place in the 16th over of the innings. Bangladesh were in need of a partnership. Stand-in skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Rahim were batting well. Ferguson bowled a back of the length delivery. Rahim defended it and after bouncing it was heading for the stumps. Rahim tried to use his football skills and tried to kick the ball but missed it. The ball hit the stumps and then Rahim’s right leg crashed into them as well.

After an unlucky dismissal, Rahim could not believe what had just happened. He stared at the stumps for a while and then made his way back to the dressing room.

Ferguson broke the partnership before it could turn dangerous. The 36-year-old scored 18 runs from just 25 balls. Earlier, he had hit leg-spinner Ish Sodhi and Ferguson for one six each at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka.

After Shanto won the toss and opted to bat first, Bangladesh openers Tanzid Hasan and Zakir disappointed their side as they departed for single-digit scores to Trent Boult and Adam Milne respectively. Wickets kept falling at the other end but in-form Shanto led the charge. He scored 76 runs from 84 balls including 10 fours. He lost his wicket to Cole McConchie in the 32nd over of the innings.

As a result, Bangladesh got bowled out for 171 from 34.3 overs. Milne turned out to be the standout bowler for the Kiwis. He picked up four wickets from 6.3 overs. Boult and McConchie picked up two wickets each. Rachin Ravindra chipped in with a wicket as well.

This was Rahim's first appearance in the three-ODI series against New Zealand after returning from a break post-Asia Cup 2023. Earlier, he did not participate in the dead rubber Asia Cup encounter against India as he needed to spend time with his newborn child.
