The new Covid-19 variant — B.1.1.529 — has Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) concerned ahead of India’s tour of South Africa next month. With the rise of new Covid-19 variant cases in South Africa, BCCI officials will have an internal meeting to decide the fate of the series. During the meeting, India A’s tour of South Africa will also be discussed as the Priyank Panchal-led team is there for the three-match series (unofficial Tests).

“It is a point of concern and we will discuss the roadmap of India’s tour of South Africa and also about India A team which is already there,” a source told Sports Tak.

“We will first talk to our officials and then discuss it with Cricket South Africa to understand the situation and then take a call (on India’s tour). We are already in touch with concerned authorities and keeping a close track,” the source added.

On being asked about whether BCCI will call back Indian A team as countries are already stopping flights from South Africa and postponing matches and tournaments, the source said, “It is too early to comment. However, the safety and security of players is paramount. After the internal meeting followed by discussion with South Africa board, we will be able to take a call. So far, there is nothing to worry about and we are touch with (India A) players and team management there.”

On November 26, the first unofficial Test came to an end in Bloemfontein. India A are scheduled to play two more four-day games starting from November 29 and December 6.
