Story Highlights:

Gautam Gambhir picked Morne Morkel in his coaching staff last year.

Morkel turned up for a practice session late due to a personal meeting.

The BCCI is scrutinising the support staff's performance after the loss on Australian soil.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to fix the chinks in the armour of the Indian team after its lacklustre season of Test cricket which ended in a 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. More than a week after the tour, an incident about head coach Gautam Gambhir reprimanding a member of the coaching staff has to the fore.

As per a report by TOI, Gambhir was not happy with former South African cricketer and bowling coach Morne Morkel turning up late to a practice session due to personal commitments.

"Gambhir is very strict about discipline. He reprimanded Morkel immediately at the ground. The board has been told that Morkel was a bit reserved during the rest of the tour. It’s up to these two to sort it out for the team to function smoothly,” the BCCI source told the leading English daily.

The report also says that the board is scrutinising the support staff's performance as well after legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar bashed the batting coach for the inputs which have not led to the desired result, especially Virat Kohli's issues outside off stump which have left to him getting caught behind the stumps on a regular basis.

Reportedly, the role of batting coach Abhishek Nayar has been questioned. Also, the assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate is under the scanner. Both Nayar and Doeschate were part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coaching staff last season when they won the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Gambhir as their mentor.

The BCCI may make changes to their contracts months ahead of the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. India's next Test assignment is the five-Test series on England soil.

BCCI limits Gambhir's manager's presence

Meanwhile, BCCI is set to impose tour restrictions for Team India. Players' families will not travel with them for the entire tour. Also Gambhir's manager will not travel with Team India. He will not be allowed to sit in the VIP box in stadiums and stay at the same hotel as the team.
