Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah made it clear on July 27 that the board will not appeal International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to hand a two-match ban to Harmanpreet for her actions during and after the third ODI against Bangladesh.
While BCCI will not impose further sanctions on the 34-year-old, BCCI President Roger Binny and National Cricket Academy (NCA) head VVS Laxman will talk to her about the outburst.
Harmanpreet flattened the stumps with her bat, showed dissent to umpire after getting out lbw. Later, in the post-match presentation, she criticised the umpire. Also, she said a few words to skipper Nigar Sultana while posing for the trophy which were criticised by Bangladesh media.
Harmanpreet was fined 75 per cent of her match fee in addition to the two-match ban as she was found guilty of breaching ICC Code of Conduct on two accounts. She received three demerit points for it and will not be available for India’s first two matches for Asian Games 2023.
ICC in its press release said, “She was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, relating to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.”
“The Indian captain admitted the offences and agreed to the sanctions proposed by Akhtar Ahmed of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. As a result, there was no need for a formal hearing, and the penalties were implemented promptly,” the release further mentioned.
In Harmanpreet’s absence, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana is likely to lead Team India in Asian Games 2023.
Two WPL editions from from next year
BCCI provided a major boost to women’s cricket in India as Shah announced that there will be probably two editions of Women’s Premier League (WPL) from next year.
