Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced their seventeen-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa on September 12. Afghanistan will host South Africa for the three-match ODI series scheduled to start from September 18 where the first match will be played at Sarjah Cricket Stadium in Dubai.
Rashid Khan also joined the squad after missing the spot in a one-off Test match squad citing recovery from back injury against New Zealand which was called off due to consistent rain in Greater Noida.
Hashmatullah Shahidi will lead Afghanistan as captain in their historic bilateral ODI series against South Africa, with Rahmat Shah serving as his vice-captain.
The squad includes seasoned players like Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Nabi. However, injuries to key players have created opportunities for new talent. Ibrahim Zadran is out with an ankle sprain, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman is still recovering from a right phalanx sprain. Consequently, promising young players Abdul Malik, a right-handed top-order batter with recent domestic List A success, and Darwish Rasooli, a top-order batsman with experience in seven T20Is, have been added to the team.
This ODI series will be the first instance of Afghanistan and South Africa competing against each other outside of ICC tournaments. All three matches are set to take place at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, under the supervision of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB).
