Thailand spinner Thipatcha Putthawong entered record books with a rare double hat-trick in women's T20I cricket. Thipatcha who won the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women's Player of the month for May 2023 took five wickets for just eight runs against Netherlands on July 14 to create history.
All four Dutch batters got out bowled to the left-arm spinner. Thipatcha is the third woman cricketer to take a T20I double hat-trick. Germany's Anuradha Doddaballapur was the first to achieve the feat against Australia in 2020. Three of the batters got out bowled. One year later, Botswana's Shameelah Mosweu did it against Mozambique.
In men's cricket, the rare feat has been achieved by four cricketers in the format. Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga, Ireland's Curtis Campher and West Indies' Jason Holder have registered a double hat-trick in T20Is.
Teenager’s impressive numbers
The 19-year-old has played 35 T20Is so far and has a formidable record. She has 44 wickets in T20Is at an average of 11.81. Also, she has an economy rate of 4.28 runs per over. In ODI cricket, she has a good record as well. The youngster has 15 wickets from nine games including a six-fer while conceding just six runs.
Easy win for Thailand
Netherlands batter suffered a massive batting collapse. Opener Sterre Kalis held on to one end and remained not out for 51 runs from 39 balls including four boundaries. Not other batter scored in double digits as Netherlands were bundled out for 75 from 17.5 overs.
In the run chase, Thailand got off to a good start in the powerplay overs. The opening partnership was broken by Phebe Molkenboer. Nattakan Chantham got out after contributing 17 runs from 23 balls in the 39-run partnership. Suwanan Khiaoto continued to anchor the innings. She lost her wicket to Mikkie Zwilling but it turned out to be a consolation. Thailand skipper Naruemol Chaiwai and Nannapat Koncharoenkai ensured that Thailand achieve the target in the 14th over with 39 balls to spare.
