The South Africa cricket team might have enjoyed a successful Test and ODI series against India but the off the field incidents seem to have created multiple problems in South African cricket. South Africa head coach Mark Boucher has recently been in headlines for his alleged racist comments that he had made during his playing days. Former South Africa spinner Paul Adams recently claimed that he was racially abused by the former international wicketkeeper in a South Africa team song.
Skipper's support
Unsurprisingly, Boucher had to face a lot of criticism after the allegations were made. But now the South Africa Test team skipper Dean Elgar has come out in support of their head coach. According to Elgar, “it is just another hurdle” in their path and he is determined to “support him through this process.”
“Irrespective of what our head coach is going through, we still support him through this process. We know the value he adds to our system and our group. We’ve had these tough times before, and I’d like to think it’s just another hurdle in our path that we have to get over,” the southpaw was quoted while talking to News24.
The left-handed opening batsman also said that his team must “stick together.”
“We’ve got over them and as players; we realise that cricket remains cricket. We need to stick together, and that’s something we’ve done in the past while letting the process follow its course,” said Elgar further.
“We’re going to New Zealand to play cricket, win matches, and win series, and that’s how I view it. In the same breath, we’re still supporting our head coach,” the 34-year-old Test skipper said.
Successful series against India
In the recently concluded, Test series against India, the hosts had a memorable outing as they clinched the series 2-1 after suffering a defeat in the first Test match of the series. Later, in the ODI series, the Proteas showed sheer domination as they whitewashed the visitors 3-0.
The Proteas are scheduled to play against New Zealand in a two-match Test series. The series will start on February 17, in Christchurch. The second Test will kick off on February 25 at the same venue.
