FIFA will host the seventh edition of The Best Football Awards on Monday, February 27, and all eyes will be on Paris Saint-Germain star forward Lionel Messi, who led his country Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy, ending a long wait for the South American giants.
The award is given out to the top players across all fields of football for their outstanding achievements in the game in 2022.
Messi will compete for the coveted trophy alongside his club teammate Kylian Mbappe, as well as Karim Benzema, who had a whirlwind 2022, winning the LaLiga, Champions League and the Ballon d'Or award. Ronaldo is not on the final list of contenders this time around after a poor season with Manchester United led to his departure from the club and his subsequent transfer to the Saudi Arabian side
A lot of people have speculated that given Messi's exploits with club and country, he deserves the award. He also won the Golden Ball i.e the Best player of the Tournament award and scored twice in the final to take the match from the Frenchmen and into penalties.
