Sunil Chhetri clocked the third goal in India's 3-0 win over Maldives

Sunil Chhetri made a sensational comeback to international football after taking back his retirement as he led India to a thumping win over Maldives in a friendly match on March 19. The veteran striker, who had initially announced his retirement in June 2024, was persuaded to rejoin the national team due to a shortage of goal-scorers. Following productive discussions with head coach Manolo Marquez, Chhetri made his comeback in a friendly match against the Maldives. Chhetri did exactly what was expected from him as he proved his prowess by scoring India's third goal in the match held in Shillong.

Despite Chhetri's return, the Blue Tigers struggled to find their rhythm and convert chances in the opening minutes, a recurring issue for the team. The deadlock was finally broken in the 34th minute when Rahul Bheke capitalized on a set-piece opportunity. Brandon Fernandes delivered a precise corner kick, finding Bheke unmarked, as the Maldives' defense focused heavily on Chhetri. Bheke seized the opportunity, heading the ball into the net and giving India a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after India's opening goal, Brandon Fernandes was forced to leave the field due to a knee injury, prompting his substitution with Farukh Chadhury. Despite this setback, India continued to squander scoring opportunities. However, they capitalized on another corner kick in the 66th minute. With Brandon off the field, Mahesh Naorem delivered the corner, finding Liston Colaco at the far post. Colaco, left unmarked, confidently headed the ball into the net, doubling India's lead. He then celebrated with Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic "SIUUUU" gesture. As the match drew to a close, Sunil Chhetri added a third goal, heading in a cross from Colaco. Chhetri, visibly emotional, celebrated as India secured a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Looking ahead, the Indian national team is set to face Bangladesh in the upcoming AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. In preparation for this crucial match, head coach Manolo Marquez will need to address the team's finishing ability. Despite creating scoring opportunities, the team's conversion rate has been a concern, and improving this aspect of their game will be vital for success in the qualifiers.
