In their opening match of the FIH Women's Olympic Qualifier, India, ranked sixth globally, suffered a 0-1 defeat to the United States, which is ranked 24th. Despite controlling the game and creating numerous scoring opportunities, including seven penalty corners, the Indian team failed to penetrate the American defense.
The only goal of the Pool B match came from Abigail Tamer of the USA in the 16th minute. This loss complicates India's path to Paris, as they will face stronger opponents in upcoming matches. The first quarter of the match was tightly contested, with both teams achieving a few circle penetrations but unable to score. The Indian team did not fully utilize both flanks for their attacks, in contrast to the USA, which built attacks from both sides.
India continued to struggle with penalty corners, failing to capitalize on six opportunities. In the 11th minute, the American team initially scored through captain Amanda Golini, but the goal was disallowed due to obstruction, much to the relief of the enthusiastic crowd. Towards the end of the first quarter, India had a prime opportunity to score when Udita and Neha coordinated well, but Udita's shot was thwarted by the American goalkeeper, Kelsey Bing.
However, India was caught off guard at the start of the second quarter as the USA took the lead a minute in, thanks to a goal by Tamer, which was also aided by India's weak defense in their circle.
Despite India's continued pressure and earning three penalty corners in rapid succession, the American team remained solid in defense. As the first half neared its conclusion, India created two more scoring opportunities.
First, Ishika Chaudhary narrowly missed the American goal with a tomahawk shot from a tight angle, and then Navneet Kaur's reverse hit from within the circle was skillfully saved by a vigilant Bing. Post-half-time, India continued to focus their attacks through the middle, but the Americans effectively crowded this area, blocking any significant chances for the Indian team. India's strategy of holding onto the ball too long without quick release proved costly.
Inside the American circle, the Indian team often seemed to lack creative ideas. India earned another penalty corner with just 37 seconds left in the third quarter but failed to convert it.
After Monika's successful referral, India gained a penalty corner, leading to another one. However, their poor conversion rate persisted as Navneet's attempts were easily defended by the American goalie Bing.
Complicating India's situation, Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke received a yellow card and a five-minute suspension early in the fourth quarter for a rough tackle on an American player.
Down by a goal, India intensified their attacks, securing their seventh penalty corner in the 48th minute. Navneet found the net, but the goal was disallowed due to the ball ricocheting off Jyoti's feet.
The USA had three consecutive penalty corners in the final minutes but couldn't capitalize on them. Tamer's goal ultimately secured the victory for the USA. India's next match is against New Zealand on Sunday, while the USA will face Italy.
