Malaysia women's pair Thinaah Muralitharan and Pearly Tan created a massive record in Malaysia Masters badminton tournament on May 25 as they won an exhausting 211-shot rally. A rally which lasted over three minutes saw Pearly getting exhausted to the point that she wanted the point to be over as soon as possible. Struggling to catch her breath, Pearly was able to pull off an excellent drop shot which caught Ayaka Sakuramoto off-guard.
While the Malaysian pair got the point, Japanese pair Rena Miyaura and Sakuramoto kept the rally going in the last 16 encounter. The rally that lasted over 100 seconds kept the crowd on the edge of their seat. They ended up winning the encounter 21-17, 18-21, 21-19
After the rally, Pearly was an all fours whereas Thinaah threw the racquet in the air. Ayako fell on the court as the crowd cheered for the Malaysian pair.
What the Malaysian pair said about 211-shot rally
"Winning the rally felt like winning the match. I also thought that we won after surviving the rally," said Thinaah.
"I was too excited that it was finally over because it was exhausting and we just wanted it to end fast. When it was over, I really needed a break and I threw the racket as collecting it from the ground gave me some time to rest."
Pearly said that the once-in-a-lifetime rally was a test of mental strength.
"We knew we were tired but the opponent was tired too," the 23-year-old Malaysian shuttler said. "In our minds we wanted to win that shot, so we just mentally prepared ourselves very well and I'm so happy we won the point."
Previous record for longest rally
The previous record was created in Korea Open 2022 when a 195-shot rally was witnessed in a women's doubles match. BWF confirmed that it is a world record.
