Rafael Nadal fell to British no. 1 Cameron Norrie in the United Cup, but the Spaniard shut down any talk of his retirement, a question that the media apparently bring up 'at every press conference', according to the decorated tennis star.
"Every time I come to a press conference, it seems like I have to retire," Nadal told reporters. "You're very, very interested in my retirement. At the moment, that's not the case. When this day comes, I'll let you know. But don't go on the subject of retirement because I'm here to continue playing tennis," he added.
Nadal, a 22-time grand slam-winning tennis player, was beaten 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Norrie, giving Great Britain a 2-0 lead over Spain in the United Cup.
The tournament is currently taking place in Australia as a precursor to the Australian Open (January 16 to 29), where Nadal will hope to defend his title. The 36-year-old star player was aware that his performance was below par and that he will need to improve massively. "There is a way to improve, but I have time before the Australian Open starts in two weeks," he said.
Nadal was also in massive praise for his British counterpart. "He is a top player. He didn't impress me much because I know he is very good. He did a lot of things well, was very solid, without mistakes, and served well. I can do things better and I need to."
Nadal will be in action again at the United Cup on Sunday, taking part in a doubles match with Paula Badosa against Daniel Evans and Harriet Dart.
