Defence in any team is key, especially at an event as prestigious as the World Cup.

Hence, a lot of emphasis is put on the goalkeeper, which is the most important player on the pitch.

One of the best goalkeepers in the world is Germany's Manuel Neuer, who also captains his national team.

He made his first World Cup appearance in 2010 and has seven clean sheets in the World Cup, winning the Golden Glove in 2014.

After leading his team against Spain on November 27, Neuer secured a place among the greats of the game.

The German shot-stopper now has 18 appearances in FIFA World Cups, which tied for the most by goalkeepers in the quadrennial event.

Brazil's Claudio Taffarel also appeared in 18 FIFA World Cup matches.

Germany's Sepp Maier achieved this mark before Neuer.
