Story Highlights:

Cam Heyward seeks a restructured deal amid lack of progress in contract talks.

Despite a dominant 2024 season, Heyward ranks just 36th among highest-paid defensive linemen.

In a surprising and somewhat puzzling move, veteran defensive tackle Cam Heyward has opted out of fully participating in the Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp — a decision that’s raising eyebrows across the NFL. The 36-year-old All-Pro is reportedly dissatisfied with his current contract and is using his absence from on-field activities as leverage to secure a restructured deal. With two years left on his current contract and no recent progress in negotiations, Heyward’s unorthodox strategy signals growing tension between the franchise and one of its longest-tenured stars.

Cam Heyward sits out as contract talks stall

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Heyward has refrained from fully engaging in training camp drills as he pushes for a revised contract that aligns with the newly reset market for elite defensive linemen. Despite being a four-time first-team All-Pro and the reigning Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, Cam Heyward is currently the 36th highest-paid defensive lineman in the league — a ranking that does not reflect his recent resurgence or long-standing contribution to the Steelers' defensive identity.

He is set to earn $14.75 million this season under the terms of his current deal, which places him 18th among defensive tackles. For a player who posted 71 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 11 passes defended, and 8 sacks last season while starting all 17 games, these numbers fall well short of what many in the league would consider market value.

A legacy player seeking respect

Drafted 31st overall by Pittsburgh in 2011, Heyward has been a pillar of consistency and leadership throughout his 14-year career. His resume boasts seven Pro Bowl selections and five total All-Pro honors. Most recently, his performance in the 2024 season not only silenced critics but also proved that age is just a number — especially for a defensive anchor like Cam Heyward.

And yet, in a summer where the Steelers have been freely spending — locking in T.J. Watt to a $123 million extension, trading for big names like DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey, and Jonnu Smith, and even signing Aaron Rodgers to a $13 million deal — Heyward’s absence speaks volumes. His passive protest comes off as bizarre, especially considering his commitment to the team throughout his career. Still, it highlights a deeper issue: the Steelers may be undervaluing a player whose leadership and production remain elite.

No progress in sight

Despite internal discussions between Heyward’s camp and the Steelers' front office, sources report there has been no substantial progress toward a restructured deal. With training camp in full swing and Cam Heyward still not suiting up, the stand-off casts a shadow over what has otherwise been a headline-grabbing offseason for Pittsburgh.

General Manager Omar Khan, who has been aggressive in reshaping the roster, now faces a difficult decision — reward a loyal veteran with a well-earned raise or risk alienating one of the team's most respected figures.
