The Chicago Bears may enter their primetime Week 1 showdown against the Minnesota Vikings with uncertainty in the secondary. Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson, a cornerstone of the Bears’ defense, remains questionable after being limited in practice for three straight days due to calf and groin issues. His availability could play a pivotal role in Chicago’s effort to contain Minnesota’s passing attack.
Johnson listed as questionable for opener
Johnson’s presence in the defensive lineup is critical, but his practice limitations raise concerns. The standout corner has been battling both calf and groin injuries, and while he has taken part in drills, he has not been a full participant. The Bears officially listed him as questionable for Monday night’s opener at Soldier Field.
If Johnson is unable to play or is restricted, Chicago’s secondary depth will be tested against a Vikings offense expected to feature All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
Defensive Challenges for Chicago
The Bears’ defense is already dealing with setbacks. Linebacker T.J. Edwards was ruled doubtful after missing the entire week with a hamstring injury. Edwards has been a consistent starter, appearing in all 17 games each of the past three seasons. His absence will likely open the door for rookie fourth-round pick Ruben Hyppolite II to step into a bigger role.
Head coach Ben Johnson expressed confidence in the young linebacker, saying:
“He has really come into his own. He is really smart. He takes it seriously. Really athletic. D.A. (defensive coordinator Dennis Allen) and that side of the ball, they’ve really grown to think he is someone we can depend on even though we’re going to have the bright lights of Monday Night Football on us. I’d anticipate him on the field there on defense. He’s got to be a playmaker for us on special teams. And I think we’re going to continue to see that player ascend.”
Hyppolite himself welcomed the opportunity, adding:
“It’s a great opportunity. First NFL game, so a lot of excitement. I’m just ready to go out there and handle my business, do my job, and just help the team win. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s about.”
Updates in the Bears’ Backfield
The Bears did receive positive news regarding their running backs. Rookie Kyle Monangai (hamstring) practiced without restrictions and was cleared to play. Running back Roschon Johnson (foot) was limited in Saturday’s practice and is listed as questionable.
Coach Johnson praised Monangai’s progress, stating:
“Monangai has really hit his stride there over the course of the spring and in camp. I trust that guy at this point, which is a big thing to say for a young guy like that. He tends to do everything right.”
Meanwhile, defensive back and special teams contributor Josh Blackwell remains questionable with a groin issue after limited practice sessions.
Vikings’ injury report
The Vikings will also enter Monday night’s contest shorthanded. Running back Zavier Scott (ankle) and defensive lineman Elijah Williams (hamstring) have been ruled out. Safety Harrison Smith (illness) is doubtful, while standout left tackle Christian Darrisaw (knee) is questionable.
With both teams battling injury concerns, all eyes will be on Soldier Field to see whether Jaylon Johnson suits up for the Bears. His status could shape the defensive game plan against Minnesota’s explosive offense in what promises to be a crucial NFC North clash under the Monday Night Football spotlight.
