Story Highlights:

Jeff Hafley identified as the early favorite for the Giants’ head coaching job.

Hafley’s regional ties and successful coaching background strengthen his candidacy.

As the New York Giants inch closer to what appears to be another coaching transition, momentum is steadily building around one name: Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. With the franchise expected to move on from its current staff after the 2025 season barring an unprecedented turnaround, the search for a new head coach is already taking shape — and Hafley has rapidly risen to the top of the list.

Giants’ anticipated vacancy is drawing considerable interest across the league, largely because of the promising foundation the organization has assembled. Quarterback Jaxson Dart has shown early signs of franchise-caliber poise, while young playmakers Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo offer explosive upside.

The defense features a formidable front anchored by stars Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence, making New York one of the more attractive landing spots for coaching candidates heading into 2026.

But according to Sports Illustrated’s Connor Orr, one candidate stands above the rest before the hiring cycle even begins. Orr identified Hafley as the “heavy favorite” to take over in New York and highlighted his rising stock within league circles, noting,

“Hafley rides into this season as arguably one of the five top candidates and a heavy favorite for New York Giants’ job. He interviewed for the Jets’ head coaching job in 2024.”

Hafley’s coaching résumé has only strengthened since departing Boston College and joining the Packers in 2024. In Green Bay, he has earned widespread praise for elevating a defense that has become one of the unit’s most consistent strengths. His reputation extends well beyond scheme design; those who have worked alongside him highlight his leadership, authenticity, and developmental approach.

Blake James, the athletic director at Boston College, emphasized Hafley’s character and coaching acumen, saying, “He’s such a genuine person and a good guy. His defensive mind is great, but at the end of the day, people want to work for him because of his approach.” James added that Hafley excelled at maximizing talent, noting BC’s history of uncovering under-the-radar prospects and remarking, “I only worked with Jeff for two seasons, but look at guys like Zay Flowers. He was really coached up at BC.”

Hafley’s deep ties to the region further strengthen his candidacy. The Mara family — long connected to Boston College through multiple generations — has maintained strong relationships with the university, while Hafley himself is a Montvale, New Jersey native with family still residing near New York Giants’ facility in East Rutherford.

As New York Giants prepare for another pivotal offseason, Hafley’s blend of NFL experience, college success, and regional familiarity positions him as the early frontrunner to take the helm in 2026.
