Travis Kelce reaches a landmark achievement in the Chiefs’ final game of the season.

Uncertainty surrounds Kansas City’s future as the offseason begins.

Kansas City Chiefs’ final game of the season on Sunday, January 4, carried far more weight than a typical regular-season finale.

Facing the Las Vegas Raiders on the road, the matchup marked a rare ending without postseason football for Kansas City — the first time the franchise has missed the playoffs during the Patrick Mahomes era. For Travis Kelce, the night was layered with emotion, uncertainty, and ultimately, history.

Beyond the disappointment of a shortened season, the game may also represent Kelce’s final appearance in the NFL.

The veteran tight end has been open about weighing his future, knowing that a decision on retirement looms once the season officially concludes.

Travis Kelce reflects on what comes next

Kelce addressed those questions candidly during a pre-game interview with Tony Gonzalez on Amazon Prime ahead of the Chiefs’ December 25 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. Speaking honestly about his mindset, Kelce admitted the decision is far from simple.

“I think I'm still searching for those answers,” Kelce said regarding retirement. “Obviously, the way this one ended with a sour taste in my mouth. I feel motivated but I've got to make the right decision for me.”

Kelce also acknowledged that any potential return would depend on mutual interest from the organization. “I've got to hope that if I do want to come back that the Chiefs are willing to bring me back. It's a two-way street on that,” he added.

A historic milestone in silver and black

While the future remains uncertain, Kelce ensured the season ended with a defining achievement. During the January 4 contest against the Raiders, he became the fastest tight end in NFL history to reach 13,000 career receiving yards.

The Chiefs announced the milestone during the game, celebrating yet another benchmark in Kelce’s Hall of Fame-caliber career.

“Another height reached,” the team posted on social media while congratulating the longtime star. Fans echoed the sentiment, with one writing, “Blessed to have had him here,” and another calling him “The greatest in the league.”

Patrick Mahomes reacts as Chiefs look ahead

Although Patrick Mahomes was not in uniform due to a season-ending ACL and LCL injury, the quarterback still made sure to acknowledge Kelce’s achievement. Mahomes shared a simple post on X that read, “13K,” accompanied by a biceps emoji.

As the Chiefs shift their focus to the 2026–27 season, questions linger about how this roster will evolve and whether Kelce will be part of the next chapter. For now, his words continue to reflect both gratitude and passion for the game.

“I know when it's over, it's over,” Kelce said. “I feel like I still have a lot of love for this game, I feel like if I came back, it'd just be to answer that flame in my heart that I still love this thing.”
