Ohio State has found its new defensive coordinator in Matt Patricia, the former Detroit Lions head coach, ESPN reported on Wednesday. Patricia will take over the role following Jim Knowles’ departure, who helped lead the Buckeyes to a national title this past season.
Jim Knowles moves to Penn State
Knowles, a Pennsylvania native, recently left Ohio State to take the defensive coordinator position at Penn State. In doing so, he became the highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football.
Under Knowles’ guidance, the Buckeyes boasted the No. 1 defense in the country, a major contributor to their dominant 2024 season, which saw Ohio State secure four victories in the College Football Playoff, capped off by a 34-23 win over Notre Dame in the title game.
Ohio State’s defensive success in 2024
Ohio State’s defense in 2024 was a formidable force. The team allowed just 251.1 yards per game, leading the nation in that category and holding a significant advantage over the second-best team, Indiana.
The Buckeyes also ranked first in the country in points allowed, giving up only 12.2 points per game, over two points fewer than second-place Notre Dame. These defensive numbers were integral to Ohio State’s impressive 14-2 record.
Matt Patricia’s coaching background
Patricia, 50, brings a wealth of experience to the Buckeyes' defensive staff. He previously served as the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2018 to 2020, where he posted a 13-29-1 record over parts of three seasons. After his time in Detroit, Patricia joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 as a defensive assistant.
Before his stint with the Lions, Patricia was highly successful as the defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots from 2012 to 2017. During his time with the Patriots, he was instrumental in the team’s defensive strategies, contributing to two Super Bowl victories under legendary head coach Bill Belichick.
Ohio State now turns to Patricia to continue building a top-tier defense following a season of unprecedented success.
