David Shaw's tenure as the head coach of Stanford University’s football program left a lasting legacy. Despite a recent downturn in his final seasons, his reputation continues to resonate within the National Football League (NFL).
Shaw, who spent over a decade leading the Cardinal, built an impressive resume, earning recognition as one of college football’s top minds. His achievements during his time at Stanford remain a testament to his skill and leadership in shaping successful teams.
Shaw's success at Stanford
Shaw's remarkable coaching career began in 2011 when he took over the Stanford program following Jim Harbaugh’s departure. In his first season, Shaw immediately made an impact, leading the Cardinal to an impressive 11-win campaign.
Over the next six years, Shaw’s teams reached double-digit wins in five of those seasons, with his 2015 squad finishing ranked third in the nation. This era was defined by disciplined, physical football and stellar quarterback play, with Shaw developing players like Andrew Luck, who became the number one overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Shaw's career beyond Stanford
Despite recent challenges, including losing seasons in three of his final four years at Stanford, Shaw’s pedigree has kept him on the radar for NFL head coaching roles. Jane Slater of NFL Network revealed that Shaw will interview for the New Orleans Saints' head coaching position.
Currently serving as a senior personnel executive with the Denver Broncos, Shaw’s diverse coaching background includes stints with the Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens, where he worked with quarterbacks and wide receivers before joining Harbaugh’s staff at San Diego (FCS) and later at Stanford as the offensive coordinator.
The Saints' search for a new leader
The Saints are currently in search of a new head coach after parting ways with Dennis Allen in early November. Allen, whose tenure ended with a dismal 1-7 start to the season, left the team with an 18-25 record. Special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi took over as interim head coach, guiding the Saints to a 5-12 finish.
As the Saints look to rebuild, Shaw’s strong background, particularly his success with quarterbacks like Andrew Luck and Davis Mills, may make him an intriguing candidate to lead the team into the future.
Shaw's potential impact on the Saints
Although the New Orleans head coaching position is not among the most sought-after jobs this offseason, Shaw’s proven ability to develop quarterbacks and his leadership qualities could help rejuvenate the Saints.
It remains to be seen whether Shaw’s experience and reputation as a builder of winning cultures will be enough to land him the position.
