Winning against the Kansas City Chiefs is no easy feat. Patrick Mahomes and his squad are on the verge of an unprecedented achievement—securing a third consecutive Super Bowl victory, something no team has accomplished before.

Since the beginning of their dominant run in the 2022 regular season, the Chiefs have amassed an impressive 49-11 record. Their most recent defeat was a 38-0 loss to the Denver Broncos in the regular season finale, but that game saw Kansas City rest key players after locking in the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

 The Eagles' Blueprint for Success

Standing between Kansas City and history is a determined Philadelphia Eagles team, built to challenge the reigning champions. Several teams have appeared capable of dethroning the Chiefs, with many even holding leads deep into the fourth quarter. However, Kansas City has mastered the art of comeback victories, setting an NFL record with 17 consecutive wins in one score games, including 12 this season alone.

One critical factor in defeating the Chiefs is preventing Mahomes from having the ball late in the game with a chance to mount a comeback. He is aiming for his third straight Super Bowl MVP title and his fourth overall, having first won the award five years ago.

 Mahomes: The Ultimate Clutch Performer

Mahomes' ability to rally his team in high- pressure situations is legendary. In last year’s Super Bowl, he led Kansas City back from a three- point deficit in both the fourth quarter and overtime to defeat the San Francisco 49ers. Two years ago against Philadelphia, he orchestrated a 62yard drive in 14 plays, setting up a game winning field goal with 11 seconds remaining in a thrilling 38-35 victory.

His track record extends beyond Super Bowls. Five years ago, Mahomes led the Chiefs to three touchdowns in the final 6:13, erasing a 2010 deficit and securing a 31-20 win over the 49ers.

The only reliable strategy to defeat Mahomes and the Chiefs—especially on the biggest stage—requires a full 60minute effort, if not more.

Containing Mahomes and the High Powered Offense

The Eagles have some familiarity with the Chiefs, which could give them confidence heading into Sunday’s clash. However, as San Francisco learned last season, past encounters do not always guarantee success.

Philadelphia’s defense must not only stop Mahomes but also limit his ability to extend plays. The key is playing complementary football—keeping Mahomes off the field as much as possible through smart offensive and special teams play. This includes controlling possession, limiting mistakes, and ensuring favorable field position.

More Than Just Mahomes: The Chiefs’ Defensive Strength

While Mahomes is the heart of Kansas City’s offense, the team is more than just its quarterback. The Chiefs boast a strong defense and solid special teams, making them a well rounded contender.

The Eagles' acquisition of Saquon Barkley has given them the league’s most explosive rushing attack. Barkley, who averages over five yards per carry, provides Philadelphia with a reliable way to sustain drives, control the clock, and keep Mahomes sidelined for extended periods.

 Controlling Possession Isn’t Enough

However, merely controlling time of possession will not be enough to secure victory. In their last Super Bowl matchup, the Eagles outgained Kansas City and controlled the ball for over 36 minutes. Despite this dominance in key statistical areas, they still lost the game.

Mahomes has proven time and again that he can do more with less. Even with limited time of possession and fewer total plays, he has the ability to deliver decisive scoring drives and win tight games.

 The Eagles’ Path to Victory

For Philadelphia to dethrone the Chiefs, they must execute a near flawless game plan:
Utilize Barkley and Jalen Hurts to establish a strong rushing attack.
Maintain control of the game tempo.
 Minimize penalties and unforced errors.
 Win the turnover battle.

If they can successfully execute these elements, the Eagles may finally be able to overcome Mahomes and the Chiefs, securing their second Super Bowl title in franchise history.
