Za'Darius Smith has announced his retirement after 11 seasons in the National Football League. The American footballer had just signed with the two-time Super Bowl champions. The announcement comes after the franchise’s Week 6 loss to the New York Giants.

Last month, the franchise sealed a deal with a three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher for one year. The 32-year-old free agent had been one of the top pass rushers who was available in the market until the Eagles signed him. The now-retired player has only appeared in five games for the franchise. In those limited games, he recorded 10 tackles,  and.5 sacks, with 131 snaps played. Additionally, Smith had  10 pressures with a 75.9 pass rush grade from PFF.

Smith played college football for the East Mississippi Lions and Kentucky Wildcats. Before playing for the Eagles, he also played for teams like the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions. Smith was selected as the fourth round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2015 NFL Draft. 

During his prep days, Smith was into basketball, and he played the sport until he reached the senior year of his high school career. Last season with his former team, Smith recorded nine sacks and 38 pressures. With the Browns and the Lions.
