Randy Moss made a heartfelt return to ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown just in time for Super Bowl LIX. The former NFL star and longtime analyst had stepped away from the program in December to focus on his health, later revealing that he had been diagnosed with cancer and had undergone successful surgery.
To kick off Sunday’s Super Bowl coverage, the NFL Countdown team honored Moss with a touching tribute. The segment featured messages from current and former NFL stars, including Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Justin Jefferson, and others, all welcoming Moss back to the show.
The tribute brought an emotional reaction from Moss and the desk crew. "Y'all already know it's the big cry, baby," Moss said as he wiped away tears.
Grateful for Support During a Difficult Journey
Since joining NFL Countdown in 2016, Moss has been a beloved presence on the show. Upon his return, he expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he had received throughout his battle.
"Hey y'all, I can't do it alone," Moss said, acknowledging the people who stood by him. "It's been hard, but I got a lot of love and a lot of people believe in me, man."
Host Mike Greenberg admitted that the team had promised Moss there would be no tribute, but Moss seemed appreciative regardless.
"I'm happy to be here," Moss said before joking, "Greenie, don't do it again. Let's get this show started."
Overcoming a Major Health Battle
Moss first announced his cancer diagnosis on December 13, revealing that doctors had discovered cancerous cells in his bile duct during a separate medical procedure. He underwent surgery to remove them and later underwent chemotherapy and radiation. Despite the grueling treatment, Moss was determined to return to the show as soon as possible.
ESPN had announced in early December that Moss would be stepping away for an extended period to focus on his health. "He has ESPN’s full support, and we look forward to welcoming him back when he is ready," the network stated at the time.
A Message of Strength at the NFL Honors
Before his return to NFL Countdown, Moss made a remote appearance during the NFL Honors ceremony on Thursday, where he announced Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow as the Comeback Player of the Year. During the segment, Moss wore a hoodie and hat featuring his personal slogan, "Team Moss: Let's Moss Cancer", a campaign he created following his diagnosis. Proceeds from merchandise sales go toward cancer research.
Looking Ahead
With his return to NFL Countdown, Moss is back where he belongs, bringing his insight and energy to the show. His resilience has inspired both fans and colleagues, proving once again why he remains one of the most beloved figures in the football community.
