Jahmyr Gibbs rejected any notion that the Detroit Lions' championship window had shut. The running back thinks the roster still has what it requires to compete for a title despite missing the playoffs this season.
Jahmyr Gibbs' stats this season
Gibbs registered 18 touchdowns this season, however, the Lions (9-8) failed to reach the postseason for the first time since 2022.
The statement was made on Monday during exit interviews at Meijer Performance Center. Detroit finished the campaign with a 19-16 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
"We've still got a lot of great players on the team and a lot of great coaches, so we'll get back right," Gibbs said. "We just had a couple of mishaps here and there throughout the season and little bumps, but we'll be fine."
The Lions entered this season as Super Bowl favorites after clinching the NFC's No.1 seed in 2024 and winning back-to-back NFC North crowns.
Amon-Ra St. Brown confident Lions core will be hungry
Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown expressed optimism about the team's future. He crossed 1,400 receiving yards for the second time in his career but said the roster did not do enough to secure a playoff spot.
St. Brown interacted with the reporters on Friday about the upcoming offseason. He emphasized that most of the team's key players would be back. St. Brown also stressed the importance of continuity between the coaching staff and roster going into next year.
The team fought injuries, problems up front on the attacking line and could not maintain consistency in the ground game.
Lions coach Dan Campbell handed himself a failing grade for how the season turned out. Several roster decisions loom with attacking tackles Taylor Decker and Dan Skipper weighing retirement.
Meanwhile, wide receiver Kalif Raymond, defensive tackle D.J. Reader, linebacker Alex Anzalone and cornerback Amik Roberson will hit free agency.
