Story Highlights:

As the voting for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award continues, Travis Kelce has emerged as a frontrunner.

Kelce and his charitable organization, 87 & Running, recognize that creating lasting change requires continuous effort.

Just over a month ago, the NFL announced its 32 nominees for the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, which is given to a player who has demonstrated excellence both on the field and in the community. Established in 1970, the award was renamed in 1999 to honor Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton, who was known not only for his exceptional athleticism but also for his humanitarian efforts.

Among the nominees for the award is Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce, who has made a significant impact off the field with his philanthropic efforts.

Travis Kelce’s Community Impact

Kelce’s commitment to giving back to the community began several years ago when he purchased a vacant muffler shop with the intention of turning it into an incubator for inner-city students. His vision was to provide students with real-world career experience and life skills, a project that has grown over the years. The "Ignition Lab," in partnership with Operation Breakthrough, has seen impressive success.

As the NFL noted, "The seeds of Kelce's community impact were planted four years ago when he purchased a vacant muffler shop. His vision was to transform it into a unique incubator for inner-city students, providing them with real-world career experience and life skills." Today, the first graduating class of the Ignition Lab is preparing to graduate high school, equipped with work experience, internships, improved grades, industry-specific skills, credentials, and a newfound sense of hope for their futures.

Expansion and Continued Growth of the Ignition Lab

Kelce and his charitable organization, 87 & Running, recognize that creating lasting change requires continuous effort and investment. Through his dedication of time, resources, and financial support, the Ignition Lab has grown significantly since its inception. The lab has expanded by 350% and now serves students from seven urban-area high schools.

As the NFL explained, "Kelce and 87 & Running recognized that lasting impact requires continuous investment. Through his dedication of time, money, and resources, along with the efforts of staff and volunteers, the Lab has thrived from its inaugural class and beyond."

Kelce Leads the Walter Payton Award Vote

As the voting for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award continues, Travis Kelce has emerged as a frontrunner. Following his lead in the Pro Bowl vote, Kelce now leads the vote for the prestigious award, surpassing several other notable nominees. According to the NFL, Kelce is currently ahead of Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans, Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins, Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Brandon Graham, and Washington Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner, who round out the top five contenders.

Kelce and Chiefs Starters Rest Ahead of Divisional Game

In other news, Kelce and many of the Kansas City Chiefs' key starters will be sitting out the afternoon's divisional matchup against the Denver Broncos. The team secured the No. 1 seed with a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas, allowing the players to rest and prepare for the postseason.

Kelce's leadership both on the field and in his community has made him a strong candidate for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. His continued efforts to support and uplift the next generation demonstrate his commitment to making a positive impact beyond football.
