Story Highlights:

Adofo-Mensah refused to guarantee McCarthy’s QB1 status, emphasizing flexibility and playoff ambitions.

The Vikings plan to bring in competition at quarterback after McCarthy’s injury-hit and inconsistent season.

Vikings' general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said that the team's objective matters more than guaranteeing anyone a permanent job, consisting of starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah wants team's objective to be treated as top priority

Adofo-Mensah is in his fourth year running Minnesota's front office, while McCarthy was the No.10 pick in 2024 and started 10 games this season.

A reporter questioned Adofo-Mensah on Tuesday if  he wants McCarthy to stay as the team's QB1 in 2026.

"I want the Vikings to achieve our goals, and I think one of those goals is to make playoff runs and do different things like that," Adofo-Mensah said. "I think he's the character and ability to be the person to do that for our organization. If I say that in 2026, that kind of binds us into a certain area.

"The way we've set this team up, we've built this core to really, like we've always talked about, give ourselves multiple shots at it because you never know when there's going to be a year when the field feels a little bit wide open, and you can make that run."

McCarthy registered 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He threw for 1,632 yards and ranked 40th among 41 qualified passers.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah makes a big claim on J.J. McCarthy

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah disclosed that Minnesota Vikings picked J.J. McCarthy without obtaining complete information about him.

"Sometimes you have to go on incomplete information, and the information we had was all good, but it was, admittedly, incomplete and (a) small sample," Adofo-Mensah said. "Ultimately, we trusted in the information we had. We trusted in our coaches. We trusted in our team around him to do that.

"Ultimately, we're comfortable with where we are, and we're excited about where he can go."

McCarthy missed full 2024 after tearing his meniscus in his first preseason game. He missed seven more games this season with a high ankle sprain conclusion and hairline fracture.

Minnesota ranked 26th in scoring with Justin Jefferson, Aaron Jones and Jordan Addidson on offense.

Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell previously claimed that the plan is to bring in competition for McCarthy in the offseason.
