Asian Games: Three races 3 medals, Gulveer Singh completes historic treble; Pooja Singh adds bronze in women's high jump final

Gulveer Singh has completed a treble at the Asian Games 2026 while Pooja Singh won the bronze medal in the women's high jump final. The Indian long-distance runner sealed a remarkable hat-trick of medals on Tuesday by claiming bronze in the men’s 5000m final.

Singh clocked 13:32.75 to finish third at the Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium. Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew took gold in 13:30.79, while Japan’s Tomonori Yamaguchi secured silver in 13:31.43. The bronze completed an outstanding campaign for the 28-year-old Naib Subedar in the Indian Army. He had earlier won silver in the 10,000m (28:29.38) and another silver in the 1500m with a personal best of 3:36.72.

Singh’s three medals make him only the second Indian track athlete after legendary sprinter P.T. Usha to achieve a podium finish in three events at a single edition of the Asian Games. Usha won four medals at the 1986 Seoul Games. 

On the other hand, Pooja secured a bronze medal in Aichi-Nagoya, clearing a best height of 1.84 metres in the women’s final. The 19-year-old finished third behind Uzbekistan’s Barnokhon Sayfullaeva, who took gold with a personal best of 1.90m, and Kazakhstan’s Kristina Ovchinnikova, who earned silver with 1.87m.

Singh, the Indian high jumper and national record holder with a mark of 1.93m set earlier this year, led the field after clearing 1.84m but was unable to negotiate 1.87m in her three attempts. The result marks India’s first medal in the women’s high jump at the Asian Games since Bobby Aloysius won silver in 2002.
