WNBA owner called out TIME for giving Caitlin the award.

Analyst and podcaster Adam Sosnik voiced his concerns over Clark’s rise to stardom, pointing to her college record.

Caitlin Clark, the standout guard for the Iowa Hawkeyes and now a prominent rookie in the WNBA, continues to make waves in the world of basketball. After a remarkable college career and an impressive first season in the WNBA, Clark was named TIME’s 2024 Athlete of the Year, marking a historic achievement for a WNBA player. No other player in the league’s history had received such an honor, but this recognition has also sparked controversy and debate.

Criticism Over Lack of College Titles

While many celebrated Clark’s success, some commentators were quick to question the decision, particularly regarding her lack of college championships. Analyst and podcaster Adam Sosnik voiced his concerns over Clark’s rise to stardom, pointing to her college record as a key point of contention.

“She’s been catapulted to this amazing star,” Sosnik remarked, as reported by Hardwood Heroics. “You know how many championships she won in college? Zero.” He also expressed frustration over the financial situation of the WNBA, claiming that Clark’s recognition seemed misplaced in light of the league’s ongoing financial struggles. “[The WNBA was] projected to lose $50 million this year but because of Caitlin Clark and all her great success they only lost $40 million this year. Name me a company that continually loses money, [then says] ‘let’s give her a trophy ‘cuz we only lost $10 million less than we expected.’”

Sosnik didn’t stop there, challenging Clark’s merit by suggesting she prove her worth by competing against male NBA players. “Will she be a great WNBA [player]? Sure,” he continued. “But if I wanna see her actually wear her merit, put her in the NBA. Have her play against Steph Curry, have her play against LeBron [James], have her play against Kevin Durant, have her play against the greatest players in the world then show me what she does.”

The Challenges of Physical Differences in Basketball

While Sosnik’s comments generated a strong reaction, it’s easy to see why his challenge to Clark is difficult to implement. The physical differences between male and female players present obvious barriers, making such a direct comparison impractical. Clark’s achievement, nonetheless, is significant, and she continues to be a transformative figure in women’s sports, despite the criticism surrounding her.

However, narratives like those posed by Sosnik do not always align with the broader goals of the WNBA and its efforts to grow the league. While Clark is undeniably a remarkable talent, these kinds of criticisms could serve to hinder the progress the league has made toward increasing its visibility and recognition.

Sheila Johnson Weighs In on Clark's TIME Honor

Sosnik wasn’t the only one questioning Caitlin Clark’s recognition. Washington Mystics co-owner Sheila Johnson also raised concerns about why Clark was singled out for TIME’s Athlete of the Year honor. In an interview with CNN, Johnson argued that the entire WNBA should have been recognized for its contributions to the growth of the game, especially considering the stellar performances from multiple players throughout the 2024 season.

Johnson suggested that the WNBA’s collective achievements deserved more recognition, rather than attributing the honor to one player. “I think the WNBA as a whole should have gotten the honor,” Johnson explained, highlighting how various players had played key roles in growing the league.

Caitlin Clark’s Response to Criticism

Despite the criticisms, Caitlin Clark has remained focused on her achievements and on promoting the game of basketball. While she has tried to uplift her colleagues and dismiss the negative narratives, the attacks against her and her place in the spotlight persist. As the only WNBA player to be featured on the TIME cover, Clark’s story continues to spark conversation, whether in support or opposition.

As the WNBA enters a new phase of growth, Clark's status as a player—and the narratives surrounding her—will likely continue to influence the public’s perception of the league, its stars, and its future trajectory.
