Former Sri Lanka fast bowling all-rounder Farveez Maharoof believes that Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to get their spot in the Suryakumar Yadav-led squad for the Asia Cup because India have a huge player strength. After announcing the squad, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Ajit Agarkar also explained Shreyas Iyer's absence, "With regards to Shreyas, it's not his fault, nor is it ours. It's just that you can pick 15, and at the moment you'll have to wait for his chance."
In an exclusive conversation with Sports Tak, Sri Lanka's fast bowling all-rounder Farveez Maharoof who also represented Delhi Capitals (DC) during his playing days lauded the Indian setup and believes that the Indian Premier League (IPL) also plays a crucial role for players to showcase their talent and India's dominance in the shortest format of the game. Team India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, has won all their T20I series since the T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Blue faced Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa and England, where they came victorious in all the T20I series. India's last T20I series defeat came against the West Indies in August 2023.

"So many players to choose from there for example, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer can't find a place in the Indian side, which shows the strength of the Indian set-up, it's just on paper man. And also with the IPL initiated, so many players are coming through. So it's certainly a for choice when it comes to players and just on paper, based on my gut feeling" Farveez Maharoof told Sports Tak on the sidelines of the Champions League T10 tennis ball tournament happening in Noida.
Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to start from September 9 and defending champions India will start their campaign on the next day against UAE at Dubai International Stadium in Dubai. The high-voltage clash between India and Pakistan will take place on September 14 at the same venue.
