Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif is not convinced about how Suryakumar Yadav has used his services with the new ball in the T20 Asia Cup 2025, getting three overs upfront. Kaif feels that this may not work in India's favour and they may end up losing the T20 World Cup 2026 at home if it continues.
“My concern is Jasprit Bumrah bowling three overs with the new ball. I had mentioned that and my problem is that as an Indian fan, I have been a cricketer, but as a fan, in the context of the T20 World Cup," Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
“Bumrah has just one over remaining for the last 14 overs. So, I wasn’t happy about that. He keeps getting injured and does not play all the matches continuously. He didn’t play the previous match as well.
“He (Bumrah) is getting a chance to play while taking breaks, so he remains fully fit. It was in my mind that if Suryakumar Yadav continues using him this way, we will not win the T20 World Cup, take it in writing," Kaif added.
Earlier, Kaif faced the ire of Bumrah when he pointed out that he is bowling three overs on the trot to avoid getting injured. He said that Rohit Sharma did not use his overs in this manner. In reply, the pacer said "inaccurate before inaccurate again".
Kaif says he understands Bumrah’s frustration
Kaif replied to Bumrah’s tweet and talked about it on his YouTube channel as well. He also recalled when he took out his frustration on people when he was trying to make a comeback.
“I can understand that. I, too, have been a cricketer and have been in such situations. The guy is injured and isn’t able to play continuously. Like in England, he played three out of the five matches," the 44-year-old said.
“When someone pulls the reins and does not give a free hand, it is a very difficult time for a player. When I was trying to make a comeback after being dropped, even I got angry at some people out of frustration," he added.
How Bumrah has performed in T20 Asia Cup 2025?
So far, Bumrah has played four games in the T20 Asia Cup 2025. He has taken five wickets at an average of 22 and conceded runs at 7.33 runs per over. He is India’s second joint highest wicket-taker in the tournament, heading into the final.
