Kris Srikkanth doesn't want Shubman Gill to be selected in India's squad for Asia Cup

Gill hasn't played for India in the T20I format since July, 2024

Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth is firmly against the selection of Shubman Gill in the Men in Blue's squad for Asia Cup 2025. Gill last played a T20I for the national team in July, 2024 against Sri Lanka and since then his primary focus has been ODIs and Tests. Despite this, there were speculations that the 25-year-old will get a place in India's Asia Cup squad.

However, Srikkanth feels that suddenly recalling Gill won't be a smart move and pointed out how the batter didn't even participate in the 2024 T20 World Cup which was India's previous major tournament in the shortest format. Moreover, Gill also didn't feature for the Men in Blue in their past few T20I assignments against the likes of Bangladesh, South Africa and England.

"If Shubman Gill was the captain [in T20Is], he would have automatically come into the playing XI. Then, there would be no Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal or Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Gill would have opened straightaway. But, Gill wasn't part of the T20 World Cup. Where does he come in suddenly?," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

"He was not even in the T20I team against England. Yes, he has been doing very well recently, but we can't make selection calls like that," he added.

Gill was superb for GT in IPL 2025

Meanwhile, Gill performed well with the bat for the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025. He finished as the fourth-highest scorer of the tournament with 650 runs under his belt from 15 matches. He also maintained a blistering average of 50.00 and recorded six 50+ scores. Though he may be able to contribute well with the bat for India if he gets picked in the squad for Asia Cup, the team already has a lot of other options in the department and it is unlikely that the youngster will get a place.

On the other hand, India have been picked in Group A of Asia Cup alongside Pakistan, UAE and Oman. The Men in Blue will begin their campaign with the clash against UAE on September 10 before locking horns against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14. They will wrap up their group stage with the match against Oman on September 19.
