India is set to announce the squad for the ODI series against Australia at 8:30 pm, Sports Tak has learnt exclusively. The squad will most likely be very similar to their Asia Cup and ODI World Cup 2023 teams, as skipper Rohit Sharma and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar will address the media in a virtual press conference.
The upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia will see Team India enter as Asia Cup champions after the brilliant bowling performance that left Sri Lanka dismissed for 50 runs. In response, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan chased down the target in a little more than 6 overs.
Meanwhile, Australia announced their squad on Sunday, September 17, without injured opener Travis Head. Cricket Australia unveiled an 18-player squad for the three-match series against India, which gets underway in Mohali on Friday, September 22.
“Head will undertake further medical review on return to Australia before a return to play schedule is determined,” CA said in a statement.
Head fractured his wrist during their ODI against South Africa at Centurion, was the notable absentee, with the 29-year-old set to return to Australia following the ongoing white-ball tour of South Africa.
On Monday, it was announced that Head will be missing the first half of the ODI World Cup 2023 after this injury.
Speaking about Head's unfortunate injury, Australian coach Andrew McDonald stated, “The timeframe is still a bit loose at the moment but the good news is he doesn’t require surgery as it sits at the moment." This leaves the team management in a quandary: should they retain Head in the squad, hoping for his swift recovery, or opt for an in-form Labuschagne?
