Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma's brigade emphatically secured their eighth Asia Cup title by dominating Sri Lanka in the final held at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 17. Spearheaded by a spellbinding performance from right-arm pacer Mohammed Siraj, India cruised to a 10-wicket victory over the host nation.
Siraj showcased a masterclass in fast bowling, leaving the Sri Lankan batters reeling. They collapsed to a mere 50 runs in just 15.2 overs. His exceptional spell culminated in figures of 6/21 in seven overs, including a maiden. While Siraj was the star of the show, Hardik Pandya made significant contributions with three wickets, and Jasprit Bumrah also added to the tally.
The modest chase of 51 seemed effortless for the Indian batters. Captain Rohit Sharma decided to rest himself and promoted Ishan Kishan to open alongside Shubman Gill. The duo unleashed a flurry of boundaries against the Lankan pacers, who seemed overwhelmed despite the pitch's supportive conditions. Gill's swift 27 runs from 19 balls, peppered with six boundaries, and Kishan's decisive 23 runs off 18 balls saw India reach their target in just the seventh over.
"Yeah was a great performance. To come out and play like that in the final shows the mental character," Rohit told host broadcaster after the win.
"Great start with the ball and clinical finish with the bat. I was standing in the slips, and something we take pride in - our seamers have been working really hard. Very very clear in their mind. It was good to see that. Such a performance we will cherish for a long time. I never thought it's going to do that much. Comes down to the skillset of individuals. Siraj has to be given a lot of credit. Rare for seamers to move the ball in the air and off the pitch. He's coming off age. We did everything we could've achieved as a team in this tournament," he added.
