In a strategic move to ensure mental well-being and peak performance, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has brought onboard sports psychologist Dr. Maqbool Babri. He will provide counselling support to the men's cricket team during their ODI series against Afghanistan in Sri Lanka and the high-octane Asia Cup before the much-awaited ODI World Cup knocks the door.
A PCB source confirmed the appointment, stating, "Yes, Dr Maqbool Babri, who has previously worked on counselling some of our players, will be accompanying the squad." The intention behind this move is clear: the PCB wishes to provide all necessary amenities to the players, allowing them to channel their complete focus on cricket and upcoming matches.
Babri's association with the PCB and players isn't new. He has previously assisted several players, helping them navigate through high-pressure situations, overcome performance slumps, and address personal issues.
Offering insight into the rationale behind having Babri travel with the team, an insider from PCB explained that the presence of a qualified psychologist ensures players don't suppress their feelings. They can readily discuss their concerns, enabling a healthier mental state.
In related news, the PCB has unveiled plans for a pre-departure camp for the players set to begin at the National Cricket Academy, Lahore. This preparatory camp, starting on Monday, will be a brief three-day affair before the team sets off for Hambantota on 17 August. The list of attendees includes Abdullah Shafique, Faheem Ashraf, Muhammad Wasim Jnr, Salman Ali Agha, and Saud Shakeel.
Notably, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Rizwan, Tayyab Tahir, and Shaheen Afridi will be flying into Lahore on 16 August from London, aligning with the team's departure on the 17th. Moreover, players participating in the Lanka Premier League, with captain Babar Azam at the helm, will rendezvous with the rest of the team in Hambantota.
The PCB's initiative doesn't stop here. They have extended invitations to eight more players for the camp. The new additions are Abbas Afridi, Abrar Ahmed, Arshad Iqbal, Mohammad Imran Jnr, Mohammad Umar, Sufyan Muqeem, Mehran Mumtaz, and Qasim Akram. This comprehensive approach underlines PCB's commitment to the players' preparation and mental well-being, ensuring they're World Cup-ready.
