Inside sources suggest that Axar is still the frontrunner for the backup spinner's position.

Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to make a comeback for India's third ODI clash against Australia after a one-match hiatus. However, the fitness of all-rounder Axar Patel, recovering from a quadricep tear, continues to be a concern for the team management as the World Cup approaches, according to BCCI insiders on Monday.

Despite Ravichandran Ashwin's commendable performance in the recent matches, the management remains optimistic about Axar, the proficient left-arm spinner. The final roster for the World Cup will be unveiled on September 27. Inside sources suggest that Axar is still the frontrunner for the backup spinner's position, even ahead of the experienced pro from Tamil Nadu.

"The team management wants to give Axar full chance of recovery. His forearm and finger bruises have healed but may be in another few days, he would get fit for World Cup. India's first match is on September 8 and hence there is time," a BCCI source said ahead of the match.

"As far as Ashwin is concerned, we now know that he is match fit and in rhythm. If Axar can't make it, Ashwin walks in," a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Young sensations Shubhman Gill and Shardul Thakur are believed to have been provided a brief rest, and are likely to miss the third ODI in Rajkot this Wednesday.

"As per rotation policy of the team, Bumrah, who was given a couple of days off to freshen up is back along with skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav. Gill, who has been playing continuously gets to cool his heels for 3-4 days along with Shardul Thakur," the source added.

Gaikwad and Mukesh set sights on Asian Games

Ruturaj Gaikwad, captain of India's cricket team for the Asian Games and part of the initial two ODIs, is now preparing for his journey to Hangzhou. Mukesh Kumar, the paceman who stepped in during Bumrah's break, will also depart.

Furthermore, it's anticipated that Washington Sundar will be departing shortly after the game. Although the World Cup-bound Indian team has decided against traveling net bowlers, the likes of Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Mukesh Kumar will be called upon as necessary.

In summary, as preparations ramp up for the World Cup, player fitness and strategic rest continue to be the focal point for the Indian cricket team management.
