Pakistan is facing New Zealand in Champions Trophy opener.

The match is taking place in the Karachi Stadium.

Babar Azam suffered big blow ahead of the match.

Indian batter Shubman Gill surpassed Babar Azam as the world no.1 batter in the fifty-over format after taking the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings. Shubman's outstanding performance in the three-match series against England made him the top-ranked batter. Just before the 2025 Champions Trophy, Shubman vaults to the top of the ODI batting rankings. India will greatly appreciate the young player's continued success in the 50-over format. Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of India, recently praised Shubman. Gambhir has noted that the batter's recent promotion to vice-captain has improved his consistency.

Shubman Gill's astonishing performance

When it comes to the 2025 Champions Trophy, Shubman is in excellent form. Shubman got one hundred and two fifties and finished with 259 runs at an average of 86.33 during a three-match series against England. The former Pakistan captain was only five points away from the Indian batter, who had closed in on Babar Azam last week. Babar lost 13 points and Shubman gained 15 on February 19. Babar currently has 776 points, while the young Indian star has 796.

The top 10 ODI batter rankings include four Indian batters in total. Rohit Sharma (3), Virat Kohli (6), and Shreyas Iyer (9), in order, come after Shubman Gill. In the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, India's batters only participated in three ODI matches. Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer have also been playing well aside from Shubman.

Given the inconsistent performance of the senior batters, Indian cricket fans will be counting on the juniors to do well in the ICC event. Despite scoring 100 and 50 runs against England, respectively, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not appeared to be very reliable. India will face Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand in their three group-stage games. Dubai International Stadium will host all of India's games.

As for Pakistan, they are clashing against New Zealand in the tournament opener which is taking place in National Stadium Karachi, on February 19 (Wednesday).
