After India defeated New Zealand by four wickets on Sunday, March 9, to win the Champions Trophy 2025, legendary opening batter Virender Sehwag was gushing over Rohit Sharma's leadership. After Mitchell Santner chose to bat first in the summit match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the Rohit Sharma-led team first held New Zealand to 251/7 before chasing down the 252-run goal in 49 overs for six wickets. With India's victory in the final on Sunday, Rohit became the sixth skipper in the world and the second Indian to win multiple ICC titles, behind MS Dhoni.
Sehwag on Rohit Sharma
Speaking on the Cricbuzz show, Sehwag expressed his admiration for Rohit's leadership of India, stating that the 37-year-old right-handed batsman has a unique ability to bring everyone along with him. Rohit is astute use of bowling resources during the eight-team event, which India won with a perfect win record, also much impressed him.
“We underrate his captaincy, but after these two trophies, he became the second (Indian) captain after MS Dhoni to win multiple ICC titles. The way the captain has used his bowlers, the way he has handled the team, the way he has guided the team, and whatever communication he does, he does it very clearly. Whether it’s playing Harshit Rana first ahead of Arshdeep Singh or then bringing in Varun Chakravarty in place of Harshit Rana, he has done good communication with his players, and that was important. That’s why Rohit Sharma is a better captain," said Sehwag
“He thinks less about himself, more about his team, his teammates. He makes them comfortable. He realises that if a player has insecurity, then his performance will not come. That’s why he doesn’t let anyone feel insecure in that team. He takes everyone with him. This is the need for a better captain and leader. And Rohit Sharma is doing it very well," Sehwag added.
Rohit's ability to bring the squad together has been commended by other players before Sehwag. In an interview last year, star wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson expressed his admiration for Rohit and said the Indian captain told him why he was not included in Team India's playing XI for the T20 World Cup 2024 final.
