Out-of-favour Prithvi Shaw is likely to play for English County side Northamptonshire in the ongoing County Championship to brush up his red-ball skills. Shaw will join the County side after West Zone's campaign in Duleep Trophy 2023.

"Yes, Prithvi will be leaving once he finishes his Duleep Trophy assignment for West Zone. He is likely to play the July 19-22 game against Somerset if all goes well," a source close to the cricketer told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Shaw who played his last Test against Australia in 2020 was not among the names being considered for India’s tour of West Indies. As Cheteshwar Pujara got dropped after India’s loss to Australia in World Test Championship 2021-23 final, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad were included in the Test squad. Shaw has been ignored due to his alleged off-the-field behaviour as well.

Shaw is likely to play in England’s One-Day competition, the Royal London Cup as well. India’s Under-19 World Cup 2018-winning captain struggled in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season for Delhi Capitals (DC) as well. He scored just 106 runs from eight innings at an average of 13.25 including a solitary half-century.

Shaw to join elite list

Shaw will join India's former captains Bishan Singh Bedi, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble on the list of Indian cricketers who have represented Northants.

Shaw’s Ranji season

Shaw had an inconsistent Ranji Trophy 2023. The Mumbai batter scored 595 runs from 10 innings at an average of 59.50 including one century and one half-century. However, his record-breaking 379-run knock stood out of the lot.

Shaw’s Test record and last international appearance

He has played a total of five Tests and scored 339 runs from nine innings at an average of 42.37 including one century and two half-centuries. His last international appearance was in a T20I against Sri Lanka where he got out for a duck.

Shaw in action next week

Shaw will be seen in action at KSCA Cricket Stadium Ground, Alur starting July 5 in Duleep Trophy semi-final. If Priyank Panchal-led West Zone progress to the final, then he will be free to travel to England after July 16.
