Despite contributing significantly to the Indian Test team in his career spanning 16 matches, Hanuma Vihari has found himself sidelined since his last appearance in July 2022. At 30 years old, Vihari expressed disappointment over his absence from the Test setup, while actively striving to reclaim his position in the national squad.
"I do feel sad and disappointed that I am not in the Test team, but everyone goes through ups and downs, and my job now is to score runs in the Ranji Trophy. The season has gone all right, both for the team and for me. So the ambition is to score a lot of runs and try to return to the Test team," Vihari told ESPNCricinfo.
""No-one has spoken to me recently, but Rahul Dravid did speak to me after my last Test, and he told me what I can improve on, but no, I haven't been in touch with anyone since then.
"I am at a stage [in my career] where I have no expectations. I give my best each time I bat and then whatever happens will happen," he added.
Currently showcasing his form in the Ranji Trophy, Vihari has amassed 365 runs over seven innings this season. His campaign kicked off with notable half-centuries against Bengal and Andhra, capped by a standout innings of 183 against Chattisgarh, underlining his readiness for international duty.
Throughout his brief yet impactful Test career, Vihari has demonstrated versatility, having batted across five different batting positions. While he has primarily been slotted at number 6 in nine matches, he has also filled in at numbers 3, 5, and 7, adapting to the team's needs. Initially favored for overseas conditions, his exclusion since 2022 reflects a dip in form.
Vihari's resilience and skill were on full display during India's 2019 tour to the West Indies, where he scored his first Test century at Sabina Park, Kingston. Missing a century in the series opener only fueled his resolve, leading to a disciplined 111 off 200 balls, adorned with 16 fours.
Yet, it was his gritty innings in Sydney during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy that highlighted his indomitable spirit. Nursing a hamstring injury, Vihari's 23 off 161 deliveries epitomized defiance, contributing to a memorable draw despite being one of the slowest knocks to cross the 20-run mark in Test cricket history.
Despite these commendable performances, Vihari's struggle for a consistent place in the Indian lineup has been a focal point of discussion among cricket circles, underscoring the challenges he faces in cementing his spot amidst intense competition.
