Australian captain Pat Cummins who scored 12 runs in the unbeaten 202-run partnership with Glenn Maxwell was in awe of his teammate's knock for the ages. Hailing it as the greatest knock in ODI history, Cummins said that he has lived his "I was there" moment.
Maxwell battled cramps, Mumbai heat, and scoreboard pressure to rescue Australia from 91/7 with his record-breaking unbeaten 201 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
"I mean (all the innings) I've ever seen. It's probably the greatest ODI innings ever. We're just chatting about it, all the players and we’ve decided it's one of those days where you just go, 'I was there in the stadium the day Glenn Maxwell chased down that total by himself'," Cummins said in the post-match press conference.
Cummins was asked whether Maxwell will be fit to play against Bangladesh in their last league game on November 11 in Pune to which he replied, "I'm sure, he (Maxwell) will be fine. He was cramping but I think you saw out there how much he loves playing for Australia and do anything to play. So, I'm sure it'll be fine.”
When Maxwell was down on the ground in agonising pain due to cramps, Cummins had signalled Adam Zampa to be ready to join him in the run chase. However, Maxwell fought through and dealt mostly in boundaries when Australia needed more than 50 runs. Cummins revealed that the physiotherapist told Maxwell that he should not consider coming back as an option as it may get worse.
"I thought he was going off. So, I kind of signalled to Zamps (Adam Zampa) to get down here cause yeah, he (Maxwell) literally couldn't move and then I think the physio was out there obviously. He kind of convinced Maxi that if he came off, it might be worse off. So, try and hang out there, stand up, and that's probably your best bet,” he said.
"Because once you go off it's that much cramp but there's no guarantee you're going to get back out there.”
Australia booked their spot in the World Cup 2023 semi-finals with a famous win over Afghanistan. They have 12 points from eight games.
