The incident occurred after Australia's victory over India in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19, where Australia secured their sixth ODI World Cup title with a 6-wicket win.
The viral photo, shared by skipper Pat Cummins on Instagram, captured Marsh sitting comfortably with his feet nonchalantly resting on the prestigious World Cup trophy in what seemed to be the team's hotel room. The image stirred up controversy, drawing criticism from various quarters.
Shami, who emerged as the leading wicket-taker of the 2023 ODI World Cup with an impressive tally of 24 wickets in seven matches, expressed his hurt over Marsh's actions. He emphasized the significance of the trophy, stating that it is a coveted prize for which teams worldwide strive.

"The trophy, which you want to lift over your head, keeping a foot on that trophy did not make me happy," said Shami.
Shami's journey in the tournament was noteworthy, as he initially missed India's league stage matches, making a comeback due to an injury to Hardik Pandya during the game against Bangladesh.
